Who is Eligible?

Children and youths aged three to 21 who are deaf or hard of hearing, and their families, school district staff, and other professionals.

These children may or may not have disabilities in addition to their hearing loss.

The Washington state educational definition of “deaf” reads:

“Children/youth with documented hearing loss so severe that they are unable to process speech and language through hearing, with or without amplification.”

The Washington state educational definition of “hearing impaired” reads:

“Children/youth with a hearing loss, permanent or fluctuating, who are not included under the definition of deafness.”

Note:  These definitions may be changing; new WACS will be published in 2006.

Infants and toddlers aged birth to three with hearing loss qualify for services through Washington’s Infant Toddler Early Intervention Program.  We can refer you to specialized services in your area, or help to provide training and support for your local service providers if needed.  We have a free lending library of videotapes, books, curricula, and other resources.

If you suspect that an infant or toddler may have a hearing loss, you can call us for guidance.  We can help refer you to a pediatric audiologist for testing.
