Work In Washington

Working as a teacher in Washington state requires an endorsement in special education.  Check with the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) website to become familiar with these general requirements.

To work as a teacher of the visually impaired (TVI), you must be certified in that area in addition to having your special education endorsement in Washington.  TVIs as well as other staff who provide instruction in Braille must demonstrate competency with grade two standard literary Braille code by successful completion of a test.

To work as a teacher of the deaf/hard of hearing (TOD), you must be certified in that area in addition to having your special education endorsement in Washington.

There soon will be standards for educational interpreters who work with students who are deaf or hard of hearing.  For more information, contact Carol Carrothers, or check this website in early 2007.

To teach children and youths with deaf-blindness, you must be endorsed in special education.  Our program offers inservice training and on-site technical assistance to help you enhance your skills to work with children with combined hearing loss and visual impairment.
