Washington Sensory Disabilities Services & Washington State Services for Children with Deaf-Blindness – Grant Updates:

In early 2019, Dr. Glenna Gallo, Assistant Superintendent at the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI), requested that WSDS investigate having the WSDS/OSPI grant, and the federal OSEP/DB grant, be managed through the Center for Deaf/HH Youth (CDHY) and the Washington State School for the Blind (WSSB).  The director of WSDS is still Brent Stark, and the activities of WSDS outreach teams and the DeafBlind Project will continue, uninterrupted. North Central ESD (NCESD) will no longer be the fiscal agent for the WSDS grant, effective Sept 1, 2019.  Puget Sound ESD (PSESD) will no longer be the fiscal agent for the DeafBlind Project, effective Jan 1, 2020. Outreach staff of WSDS and the DeafBlind Project will continue to serve districts in all ESDs.

Brent Stark and Jackie Messer will continue to work part-time as WSDS administrators, and will be employees of CDHY. Katie Humes, Khanh Huhtala and Sarah Godwin will continue their work as the DeafBlind Project, and will become employees of WSSB, effective January 1, 2020. NCESD and PSESD have been great partners and continue to support WSDS staff during this transition. We are excited about new opportunities for outreach collaboration to increase our ability to impact students, and their educational teams and families across Washington State.
